  • SUBCULTURES: groups that have values and norms that are different from those held by the majority. (They are non-conventional)
  •  A variety of subcultures can exist under one culture (which can be the main).

1. THE GRUNGE SUBCULTURE


  • The word grunge is believed to be a back-formation from the US slang grungy, which originated in 1965 as a slang term for “dirty” or “filthy”.[1] 
  • One of the most important events in 1990s fashion was the rise of Grunge fashion in 1992.
  • Grunge fashion was influenced by grunge music.
  • Stylistic Origins- Alternative Rock, Hardcore Punk, heavy metal and indie rock.
  • Cultural Origins- Mid 1980s, Washington
  • Typical Instruments- heavily distorted electric guitars, bass guitar.  

GRUNGE FASHION


  • The Grunge fashion movement can be seen as "NONFASHION."
  •  Born of hippies and raised on punk the look was initially a thoughtless, uncoordinated look, but with an edge.
  • in the 90s thrift-store finds, like vintage floral-print dresses and silky nightgowns were worn with oversized sweaters and cardigans.
  • Grunge was dressing down at its most extreme, taking casualness and comfort dressing to an entirely new level.

Grunge Clothing includes


  1.  Plaid: The most recognizable element of grunge is the plaid or flannel shirt.Plaid was often worn as shirts, designed into skirts, pants, and even shoes.
  2. Dark gothic makeup is applied while the hair is usually messy and limp. The look that grunge people go for is the messy unkempt one. 
  3. Ripped JeansTorn jeans frequently topped off grungy ensembles. It indicated the general apathy associated with the movement.
  4. Heavy combat boots: Grunge footwear typically consisted of combat boots. (Flat, clunky, rubber-bottomed soles)

      1. Though dressing grunge is no longer a badge of authenticity, the style is still quite  popular on the high street.
      2. Ripped jeans and flannel are classic pieces that are often worn on the runway by models.
      3. Grunge has defined a new approach to dressing that includes layering and contrast of patterns and textures.
      4. In 2016, grunge inspired an upscale "reinvention" by Rihanna and Kanye West.


      2. THE HIPPIE SUBCULTURE


  •  The Hippie Subculture was originally a youth movement that arose in the United States during the 1960s.
  •  The word “Hippie” derived from hipster was initially used to describe Beatniks who had moved into San Francisco.
  • The fashion of the 1960s reflected youth. From short skirts of the mid 60's to the laidback hippie style, clothing was a reflection of the new optimistic and vibrant mood of the decade. 
Hippies generate an ecological consciousness of fashion by recycling of vintage clothes.

HIPPIE FASHION


  • They used the way they dressed as a means of showing an affiliation to the radical ideas they carried.
  • Hippies were all about free living and self-expression through music, literature, film and performance art.

3. THE GOTHS
  • The gothic subculture is a contemporary group of people who adopt fashion elements such as black clothing dyed black hair, dark eyeliner.
  • The goth subculture began in England during the early 1980s and is still very prominent in the 2000s. It has survived much longer than others of the same era and has continued to diversify.
  • The goth subculture has associated taste in music, aesthetics, and fashion. 
    Today it is used by teenagers to show a rebelling nature.
