Important terms I


Tatting
A kind of knotted lace made by hand with a small shuttle, used chiefly for trimming. [1]
The lace is formed by a pattern of rings and chains formed from a series of cow hitch or half-hitch knots, called double stitches over a core thread.


Piping
Cotton or linen plain woven ribbon about 1 cm wide used as a tailoring aid for edges, reverses, and collars.

Rick-rack or Scalloping

  • Narrow bowed-zigzag, or scalloped ribbon, plain or multi-coloured in cotton or man-made fiber for edge trimming of traditional costumes & children’s wear. [2]
  • The trim, also known as rick-rack, is a flat braid woven to form zigzags and used as trimming often on clothing.
  • Although it exudes a retro look and was extremely popular in the 1970s, it actually goes back to almost a century earlier and was a zigzag crochet braid used to decorate collars and cuffs. 
Kangaroo pocket


The pocket sits on the lower front section of the shirt.

Kangaroo pockets are generally featured on hoodies and sweatshirts. The pockets are large enough to fit your hands or even some personal belongings and are open on either side.
Other names for it include muff pocket and hoodie pocket


Welt pocket 


  • This is a set-in pocket as the pocket opening is cut into the garment rather than "set-on".
  • It is also decorated and strengthened with "piping" or fabric "welts" along with its length.
  • It is also known as “besom pocket” or “slit pocket”.
They are usually found on tuxedo jackets or trousers and may have a flap or button closure.

Patch pocket
Unlike the welt pocket, here a separate piece of cloth is sewn onto the outside of a garment.

Smocking
Smocking is an embroidery technique used to gather fabric so that it can stretch.
Before the creation of elastic, smocking was commonly used in garments in areas where buttons were not required such as in the cuffs, bodices, and necklines.

Their presence in the garments is very desirable as it makes it both form fitting and flexible.



Honeycomb is a type of stitch under smocking.
Tuck
In sewing, a tuck is a pleat or fold in fabric that is sewn in place.
Tucks are primarily used as a decorative feature and hold in place fullness within a garment.
Eg: Dart.
Ruffel

In sewing and dressmaking, a ruffle is a strip of fabric tightly gathered or pleated on one edge and applied to a garment, bedding or other textiles as a form of trimming.
Beret
It is a round,flat-crowned hat usually made of woven or wool felt.

flat cap is a rounded cap with a small stiff brim in front.
And a beret -- a soft cap with no peak.


Cowboy Hat

  • It is a high-crowned, wide-brimmed hat best known as the defining piece of attire for the North American cowboy. 
  • It is recognized around the world as part of the Old West lore.
  • The shape of the hat's crown and the brim is often modified for fashion and protection.
