A-Z of Skirts


SKIRT
A garment that is usually worn by girls or women which hangs by the waist.
There are various kinds of skirts differentiated either by 
    1. length 
    2. type
Varieties of Skirts:

1. FLOUNCE SKIRT
  • It is very similar to a pencil skirt but has an added feminine fishtail flare right at the bottom.
  • Looks best on hourglass and pear shapes but also adds shape and movement for rectangle shaped women.
  • These skirts create an attractive look by adding shape.

2. WRAP SKIRT
  • A long band of rectangular fabric that wraps around the body and secures at the waist with a tie, belt or button.
  • It resembles a sarong.
  • A great style for all body shapes as it can be adjusted around the body until it fits perfectly.
3. GORED SKIRT
A Gore is a skirt panel that tapers towards the waist line.
  • These are paneled skirts, generally, have a sectional, A-line shape the sections of fabric giving fullness to the skirt.
  • It is a popular choice of style as it offers a flattering shape and gives ease of movement to the wearer.
4. GODET SKIRT
Godets: are triangular shaped wedges of fabric placed between seams or into slits.
  • The addition of a godet causes the skirt to flare around the hemline, thus adding width and volume
  • They provide additional stride room and can be added as a design feature. 
  • They may be extending evenly to the hemline or be graduated in length.
5. CULOTTES
  • Culottes are garments that hangs like skirts but is actually pants. Hence they are also described as a split or divided skirt.
  • They have a full cut to resemble a skirt and are usually knee length or calf length.

They were developed in the mid to late-19th century to provide women more freedom to do activities such as gardening, cleaning, bike riding, etc. while giving the illusion of wearing a skirt.


MEN’S SKIRTS
Outside of Western cultures, men's clothing commonly includes skirts and skirt-like garments.

The most notable skirt variations are:
   1. Cassock
   2. Kilt

1. KILT
  • A kilt is a knee-length skirt-type garment with pleats at the rear.
  • It is associated with Gaelic and Scottish culture.
  • The kilt is characterized as a wraparound skirt.
  • The tartan (or plaid) pattern, in Scottish culture, contain the particular colors of a particular clan or region.
Kilt is most often worn on formal occasions.

2. CASSOCK
The cassock is an item of Christian clerical clothing used by the clergy of Catholic, churches, among others.

3. SARONG
A sarong is a large tube, often wrapped around the waist, worn in Asian & African region.
The fabric often has woven plaid or checkered patterns.
